I loathe putting all my eggs in one basket, but I find myself in the difficult position of probably, most likely, having to do just that.
What do I mean?
Kindle Unlimited, of course.
Right now, I have a mix of titles in KU and wide, but wide just isn’t pulling in the money and KU, unfortunately, is giving me the most bang for my buck during the pandemic right now. It’s putting me between a rock and a hard place.
Pull my books from wide and put them in KU and I risk upsetting those readers on other platforms such as Kobo, B&N, and Apple Books.
Stay wide, and I am straight murdering myself financially this month.
It’s a hit or miss prospect at this point, but I’m going to have to risk upsetting one side over the other. Not that my KU readers aren’t already upset with me for not having all of my books in KU. I regularly get emails and messages about how they refuse to read any of my books not in KU and how I’m basically awful for charging as much as I do for my books, but you know what?
I don’t care.
I work hard on each and every one of my titles and $3.99 to $4.99 a title isn’t exactly a hardship. That’s less than a fancy coffee at Starbuck’s and 4 hours plus of enjoyment versus 10 minutes, so I don’t feel bad in the slightest.
I’m going to have to make some changes this month to my line-ups, all I can definitively say, though, is nothing is set in stone. Wide versus KU, KU versus Wide is always going to be a thing and even though it’s brutal having to keep my books in KU for 90 days at a time, they will shift back and forth with the times and I will eventually discover a system of in or out that I and my readers both can live with.
I really wish Amazon would revisit their exclusivity requirement when it comes to KU. I get it, they want to do what is best for their business model, but I’d like to do that too, you know, what’s best for mine. Kobo has a similar program, but they don’t require you to be exclusive, just that you keep your book enrolled for a minimal amount of time and I love them for it.
So, as much as it’s a pain in the ass, I’m going to be flip-flopping for a while to figure out what works best.
Try to be kind and patient with me, okay?
